Golfweek names Fallen Oak Mississippi's No. 1 Course You Can Play - WorldGolf.com

BILOXI, Miss. -- One of the enduring qualities about Fallen Oak, the Tom Fazio-designed course that has captivated golfers since its November 2006 opening, is the fact any guest of the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino can play the challenging and spectacular course. Recognizing this, Golfweek named Fallen Oak Mississippi's No. 1 Course You Can Play.

This latest honor from Golfweek, recognizing public, resort or daily-fee courses on a state-by-state basis, appeared in the same March 14 edition in which the publication ranked Fallen Oak No. 55 on its prestigious Top 100 Modern Courses. That marked the course's debut on that list.

Fallen Oak is the only one of Mississippi's top five Courses You Can Play to appear on the Top 100 Modern Courses list, which recognizes courses designed since 1960.

"We are pleased Fallen Oak has been recognized as Golfweek's Best Course in Mississippi," said George P. Corchis, Jr., president and chief operating officer of MGM MIRAGE's Mississippi resorts, which includes Beau Rivage in Biloxi and the Gold Strike Casino Resort in Tunica. "It is a tremendous credit to our staff who have worked hard to make Fallen Oak one of the finest golf experiences in the country."

South Mississippi Teachers Conservation Workshop --

There have been some changes to the South Mississippi TCW. It is normally held the first week in June at Jones County Jr. College, Ellisville. Just as we finalizing plans for the 2009 workshop, the staff at JCJC advised us that the dorms will not be available this year due to maintenance. We looked for an alternate site, but could not find one.

The administration at JCJC graciously offered us the use of a classroom, meals in their dinning hall, and the use of their vans. We accepted, and put together not one, but five workshops. We will teach Project WET on Monday, June 8; Project WILD on Tuesday, June 9; Project Food, Land and People on Wednesday, June 10 and Project Learning Tree on Thursday, June 11.

We are planning a very special day for Friday, June 11, but have not worked out all the details. We are putting together a field tour. Here are some of the things we are trying to include: a visit to a tree farm, with a demonstration on timber cruising and tree identification, a visit to a forest products industry and hands-on water quality sampling.

Each day, we will furnish snacks for a light breakfast and mid-morning break and will provide lunch in the college cafeteria, or a box lunch for the field tour. (Our...
