Go Florida-friendly for Earth Day - Florida Times-Union

Many Earth Day celebrations begin this weekend and continue into next weekend.

This marks the 39th anniversary of Earth Day. The first Earth Day was held on March 21, 1970, in San Francisco. That date was selected because this is the vernal equinox, the time when night and day are equal throughout the Earth. The Earth is thought to be in harmony.

In 1971, the first Earth Week was held the third week in April. Since then, activities and festivals have increased each year.

Jacksonville will celebrate Earth Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at The Jacksonville Landing. This is a great family event with lots of educational activities for the kids and a wealth of information for adults on how to recycle, conserve, and preserve our environment. There will be free entertainment throughout the day and drawings for neat stuff like a fuel-efficient scooter and helmet.

There are many things that you as a homeowner can do to help promote Earth Day by creating a Florida-friendly landscape. Think about how you can change your landscape to conserve energy, fertilizer, pesticides, and water.

Does anyone know of how I can get someone to dig a well so I can put an irrigation system in my yard? Florida?

I live in Orange County, FL. How do I go about doing this?

1. Contact the building permit office or public works office of your county (perhaps the same office that monitors things such as septic tanks, sewage lines, and public water supplies--not the local water utility). Ask what permits are required and what work is allowed. Florida has some grave interests in the underground water supply which may affect what you can or cannot do.

2. Check out www.deeprock.com, a company which manufactures well-drilling equipment, and has been marketing do-it-yourself equipment since at least 1984, when I first heard of them. Even if you're not interested in doing the work yourself, you'll learn what's involved, some of the terminology, and be better prepared to discuss the project with a professional.

3. Check the yellow pages for companies near you that drill wells. Try to get three estimates and take careful notes of any conversations. Take your time, consider the work each company offered to do, the time they predicted the job would encompass, any guarantees of protecting your property from damage or restoring it, their liabilities and yours, and the cost.

4. Before you decide to proceed, have someone who understands contract law look over the paperwork you propose to sign to help insure that whoever you hire will finish the job, carries insurance to protect himself and you from liability, and will provide you with what you think you're going to get at the cost you think you're going to pay.

5. Take your time, and be very cautious.

Good luck!

Will my lawn irrigation make my well go dry any faster than not using it, or will it make a difference?

The water table here in Florida is very low due to drought. A few shallow wells have gone dry. I was wondering if the irrigation will accelerate it or not. Or will the well go dry just by the water table no matter what?

It depends on how dry of a summer we have. I well is supplies by an underground spring. If it does not run dry, then naturally, it will continually replenish itself. If we have a summer like most of the country had last year, it could cause your well to run dry. If you have a good spring supplying it, you should be ok.

Some areas of the country my have laws restricting how much water you can use but most may not. Be careful there.

How much would a Irrigation Sprinkler cost?

We live in Florida and always need our grass and plants watered.I want to put in a sprinker system. We run off well water. Should I put in an irrigation system sprinkler? How much would it cost? Our yard is 1.25 acers.

Thanks

I had my front yard done and it was $1,500. To have all of your proerty done won't be cheap. Even if you do it yourself.
