Group leads tests for new personal flotation devices - Alaskajournal.com

Falling overboard is a leading cause of death in the most dangerous occupation -commercial fishing.

"It doesn't make the big headlines, like when a boat goes down with all hands lost. But these 'one bys' really add up," said Jerry Dzugan, director of the Alaska Marine Safety Education Association.

Simply wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) could save countless lives, but fishermen resist using them. Safety advocates are trying to change that by having the fishermen field test new models.

"Since 1990 there have been 83 commercial fishermen in Alaska who have died from falls overboard. Many were in minutes of being rescued when they lost strength and drowned. In those cases, it very clearly could have been prevented with a PFD," said Devon Lucas an epidemiologist for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health in Anchorage.

Lucas is leading a study to find out why fishermen forego PFDs and how to improve the use of the life saving devices.

Are there any farms in Alaska to pick vegetables/fruits this summer or fall?

I'm in Anchorage, Alaska and I'd like to take my kids to a farm to pick vegetables/fruits later this summer or fall. Are there any farms that allow the public to do this? Maybe somewhere in Wasilla or Palmer?

Pyrah's Pioneer U-Pick
Palmer, AK, (907-745-4511). A visitor writes: I wanted to let you know about the wonderful people I spoke to at Pyrah's. I didn't even know we had farms like this up here. Pyrah's is a PYO, open Mon 9-5, Tues-Sat 9-9, closed Sundays. They offer field trips for kids, just call ahead to schedule... only $3 per child!

Nugget Farms -
Fairbanks, AK. (907-455-4721)

Have fun!

What are the northernmost areas in which productive farming can occur?

What is the northernmost area in which productive farming can occur. I know Ranching can occur as far north as the animals being ranched can live, but I am talking growing food - as in food that can be sold into the world market.

I ask this because I saw a picture that claimed to be Alaska that had large farm equipment ploughing a field. I didn't know there was any farms in Alaska.

It is a little bit old. Note that the transportation costs of imported produce is what makes it workable. Transportation costs are extreme in the NWT, Nunavit.
Cabbages grow huge up north.

Does anyone know of deer farms in Alaska?

I am planning on becoming some sort of deer farmer in Alaska. Can anyone give me information on becoming one? Thanks.

Indeed there's a reindeer farm in Palmer, Alaska. http://local.yahoo.com/details?id=22355652&stx=reindeer+farm&csz=Palmer+AK&ed=tQl0m6160SwlSSOvyD6u87xTrxp_05zEBHKk6Eoa8yI1ztrVcwj2Nq_O58_My.mG8d6kj1GR8i0-

This isn't the page I wanted to paste, but it'll do.

Visit my blog on Yahoo 360 for photos of my wife feeding the reindeer and their big Elk. We were the first one's there one day and the owner who was about to feed a yearling Moose, grabed her to help him feed the Moose. If you're near Anchorage, drive the short distance to Palmer and give them a visit.

While you're in Palmer, visit the Musk Ox farm for a strange animal.

Enjoy, my wife & I did.
