A recent report in the April issue of USDA’s Agricultural Research Magazine showed that one of the byproducts from biodiesel production – crude glycerin – can be used in pig feed. Here are some facts:
* In five different experiments, the pigs’ diets were supplemented with different levels of crude glycerin, one of the byproducts of biodiesel.
* Pigs fed the crude glycerin were able to digest it efficiently and it provided them with a supply of caloric energy that equaled that of corn grain.
* A follow-up study showed no effects on weight, carcass composition, or meat quality in pigs fed the glycerin.
