WV farm delivers fresh produce to your door - West Virginia Public Broadcasting
Dale Hawkins was executive chef at Stonewall Jackson Resort in Roanoke, WV, for six years. While he still works at the resort, he wants to bring the message of eating simple, local foods to the rest of the state through a non-profit program called The Collaborative for 21st Century Appalachia .
“One of the things that we found as we’ve done research over the last three years is that the supply side of quality, farm fresh food is not there,” said Hawkins. “So what we’re trying to do is literally build a local food system for our state.”
Hawkins says offering a community supported agriculture, or CSA, program is one part of a healthy local food system.
Here’s how it works: he and four other farmers in and around Upshur County will grow more than their share of produce this summer; then for eight weeks beginning in July, the produce will be packaged and shipped via UPS to people in West Virginia who join the program. Enough produce for four people costs $480; for two people is $250. Each week will bring a different variety of fresh food.
